Safer Seas & Rivers Service: The Only National Real-time Water Quality Service
Safer Seas & Rivers Service is a free iPhone app from Surfers Against Sewage that offers real-time water quality information and alerts to water users across the UK. The app alerts users when untreated sewage is discharged into waterways and water quality is temporarily reduced at over 370 locations. This information empowers users to make informed decisions about when to use the sea and rivers. The app also includes complementary beach information such as tide times and lifeguard services.
The app automatically notifies Surfers Against Sewage when untreated sewage is discharged, and a real-time sewage alert is sent through the app to avoid it. Water quality can also be reduced by heavy rainfall causing the input of multiple, often unidentified pollution sources, including road, urban, and agricultural run-off. The app includes daily pollution risk forecasts made by the Environment Agency, NRW, and SEPA for over 300 locations. Users can also report any illness caused by the sea by sending a Health Report through the app.
